The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.
Players will gain the ability to question specific rulings from the official, echoing the practice currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step comes just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review specific situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
