The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant prize-giving event nears, there’s always a demand for introducing additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and fill the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge of video game design, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
