The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.
There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.
Initial reports from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.
"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.
"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."
Previous Setbacks
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.
Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.
The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
