The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
